Director's Welcome Message

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Centre for Coastal Management (CCM) website. This website is part of our commitment to open communications to all our stakeholders as well as to the wider public interested in our activities and Ghana’s coastal environment.

The world is currently faced with multifaceted and complex challenges, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, overexploitation of natural resources and environmental and health issues, which are critically linked to issues of poverty and the sustainability of ecosystems, and consequently, issues of resource security and political stability. This presents a serious problem especially for the future of our coastal areas where human activities are most intense occurring in the form of businesses such as oil and gas, and tourism, as well as livelihoods including fisheries as the case may be. There is the general concern that human welfare will decrease if the challenges posed by these developments are not managed. Therefore, a long-term management perspective is needed to avoid irreversible degradation of resources.

Since its inception in 2013, the Centre for Coastal Management has played a pioneering role and fostered demand-driven research, professional education and community services with an ultimate goal of collectively identifying and implementing strategies for building more resilient coastal communities.

To achieve this requires the skills of many disciplines. The Centre through its programmes, works with a broad range of experts not limited to fisheries scientists, climatologists, oceanographers, coastal ecologists, chemists, geographers, geologists, health professionals and economists as well as practitioners committed with the policy and institutional aspects of human development and coastal environmental sustainability such as the national and local government authorities including coastal resource managers...
