Cuttlefish Project

This research project funded by USAID/Sustainable Fisheries Management Project was conducted to verify a concept of collaborative fisheries management involving the Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association (GITA), University of Rhode Island (USA), the University of Cape Coast and local NGOs. Objectives of the research were to collect important data on the highly valued cuttlefish fisheries resource for management purposes. It focused on understanding cuttlefish movement, and identifying the breeding grounds and breeding periods using a tag recapture and egg collectors. Indeed, the participation of fishers in research and management would be enhanced through extensive engagement, and collaboration between science and industry would be a useful approach to addressing the declining stocks.
