Journalists Empowered for Efficient Reportage of Fisheries Issues by the University of Cape Coast

The Centre for Coastal Management (CCM), now Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR), at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is organising a five-day short professional course on Fisheries Management at the Ainoo-Ansah Farms which is located at Okyereko near Winneba.  The short course, which targeted journalists from media houses distributed across the country, was organised in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences (DFAS), UCC and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD).

This session of the Fisheries Management Course was strategically planned to empower journalists who have an interest in sustainable development and natural resource management with relevant and accurate knowledge in the subject area of fisheries management. This comes on the back of persistent distortions and/or inadequacies in reports on the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in Ghana.

At the opening ceremony attended by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Dora Edu-Boandoh, and the Honourable Minister for MoFAD, Ms. Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye, the participating journalists, mainly business, natural resources, fisheries and general reporters, expressed a keen interest in expanding their scope of reporting to include fisheries management issues as well as their expectation to efficiently report same.

The Fisheries Management and other courses on Climate Change, Geographic Information Systems, Integrated Coastal Zone Management, and Fisheries Leadership at the Centre for Coastal Management are supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the USAID/UCC Fisheries and Coastal Management Capacity Building Support Project being implemented by the DFAS-UCC.
