Research-based Management of the Gulf of Guinea (HOTSPOT)

Call for Applications for Research Grants – Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Degrees for the 2018/2019 Academic Year at the University of Cape Coast

Background:

HOTSPOT is a three-year collaborative research project of the Technical University of Denmark and the University of Cape Coast, Ghana and jointly financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and the University of Cape Coast.  The project aims at identifying the main sources of pollution in the coast of Ghana and quantifying their effects on the marine life – alone and in combination with the effects of climate change and with the ultimate objective of contributing to the sustainable management of Ghana’s marine environment and its resources, and to build up research capacity in the maritime area for academia and policy.  

1. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degree

Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for the award of research grant for one (1) student to pursue a PhD degree at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of the University of Cape Coast in Integrated Coastal Zone Management. The PhD study will cover a period of three (3) years, beginning the 2018/19 academic year. The funding covers field and laboratory research grants and the successful applicant must show demonstrated ability to provide additional funding to complete the programme.

General Requirement: Applicants must generally qualify for admission into a PhD programme at the University of Cape Coast.

Specific Requirements: In addition, all applicants must satisfy the following specific requirements:

Must hold a good master’s degree from a recognized University in Marine Biology or relevant field of study and must have been actively involved in marine research for at least five years.
All candidates must submit: An application letter, Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Two letters of recommendation and a 5-page research proposal on one of the following areas of emphasis:

Assessment of Biodiversity and Health of the Coastal Ecosystems.
Modelling pollution indices for effective management of the Ghanaian Coastal Ecosystem
 

2. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Degree

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the award of two (2) research grants tenable at the University of Cape Coast. The Master of Philosophy Degree study will cover a period of one academic year beginning 2018/19. The funding which will cover field and laboratory research works as well as other material and technical support will be tenable in the following areas.

1. fisheries science;
2. environmental science or
3. integrated coastal zone management

Requirements:

Applicants must be candidates of a post graduate programme of a recognized University and must have successfully completed the part one (course work) of the study. In addition to this, all applicants must submit the following:

• An application letter;
• Curriculum Vitae (CV)
• An approved research topic that aligns with the objectives of the HOTSPOT project
• Two letters of recommendation
• Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 31st October, 2018 (11:59)
• Females are particularly encouraged to apply.

Only shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview after the closing date.
