Rationale

The fisheries sector is important in the economies of many developing countries. It provides livelihood for many coastal communities and contributes significantly to gross domestic product. With the current downward trend in marine fisheries there is an urgent need for management actions to address the issue. However, institutions mandated to oversee the development and management of the sector are constrained by a shortfall in high-level personnel with expertise in Fisheries Science. The PhD programme in Fisheries Science is therefore designed to enhance the research, analytical skills and fisheries resource management capabilities of the students.
