The National Institute of Aquatic Resources, Danish Technical University (DTU Aqua) and the Centre
for Coastal Management, University of Cape Coast (CCM, UCC) through their HOTSPOT II Project
kindly invite interested participants to a 6-day scientific writing workshop from 23rd – 30th November
2022 at the University of Cape Coast.
The aim of the workshop is to give a general introduction to data handling, scientific writing and
publication.
The structure of the sessions will be 30-40 minute lecture(s) on the general topics, followed by
discussions with focus on peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals.
23 Nov. Introduction to scientific communication
Topics covered: Hypotheses, goals and objectives, accuracy, clarity, referencing,
ethics. The most standard structures, titles, keywords, abstracts.
24 Nov. Planning and Structure and drafting an article
Topics covered: The writing process, brainstorming/mind maps, abstracts, writing
blocks.
25 Nov. Data and statistics
Topics covered: Data types, basics tests to use, how to present statistical results,
what goes in the article and what goes into supplementary data
29 Nov. Clarity of writing
Topics covered: Who is the audience, Sentence structure, topic-sentences.
30. Nov - Publication
Topics covered: What journals to choose, impact factors, review process, letters to
editors, answering reviewer comments, open access (red, yellow green)
Eligibilty Criteria
Interested participants should be;
(1) undergraduate or postgraduate student writing a dissertation, thesis and/or scientific
publication,
(2) a researcher from academia or industry involved in data collection, analyses and scientific
report writing.
NB: Successful applicants shall be responsible for their own accommodation.
