The Centre for Coastal Management organizes a stakeholder validation workshop for a Marine Litter Training Programme for West Africa

The Centre for Coastal Management at the University of Cape Coast is developing a marine
litter training programme for the West African Region with funding from the United Kingdom’s
Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP). The Marine Litter Training Programme, made
up of three short courses, i.e. (a) Marine Litter Monitoring and Assessment, (b) Social and
Behavioural Research in the Context of Marine Litter and (c) Marine Litter Management - policy
and interventions is geared towards building expertise in marine litter research to fill critical
knowledge gaps within the West African sub-region. The training programme will also build
capacity of policymakers and leaders to contribute to improved plastics/marine litter
management within the sub-region.


To create awareness about the training programme and ensure that the content of the courses
reflect the needs of Ghana and the sub-region, the Centre organized a stakeholder validation
workshop of the draft curriculum of the training programme from 30 th – 31 st January 2024 at the
Pempamsie Hotel in Cape Coast.

The validation workshop brought together stakeholders from the Government ministries and
agencies such as the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI),
Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR), the Ministry of Finance, the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA), Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the Fisheries Commission.
Other participants also included representatives from the Council of Scientific and Industrial
Research (CSIR), Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), the United Nations
Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), Jospong Group of Companies, Environment360
and academia.

Through a blend of presentations, group activities and open discussions, participants of the
the workshop were able to make insightful suggestions and recommendations towards improving
the training programme. The consensus of the participants was that the content presented for
the three courses was comprehensive and would be able to provide the needed expertise to
generate the data needed for sustainable policies to address the marine litter challenge within
Ghana and the sub-region.
