In a celebration of academic prowess and commitment to coastal sustainability, the Centre for Coastal Management at the University of Cape Coast proudly announces the selection of 13 outstanding scholars into the prestigious OCPP Ghana Scholarships Program. This marks a significant milestone in the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and environmental stewardship.

The OCPP (Ocean Country Partnerships Programme) Ghana Scholarships, is funded through the UK’s Blue Planet Fund, to offer a unique opportunity for students from Ghana to undertake a fully funded Master’s in marine science. This scholarship program, hosted at the University of Cape Coast, is a beacon of educational opportunity and environmental advocacy that will enable scholars from Ghana to harness their regional knowledge, conduct vital research, and help to develop solutions to marine environmental problems It aims to support scientific research that will contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of marine resources, and strengthen responses to marine environmental challenges, while also making a positive and tangible impact on the livelihoods of coastal communities that depend on healthy marine ecosystems.

Each candidate underwent a comprehensive evaluation, showcasing their academic achievements, research potential, and deep-seated commitment to the principles of marine science and coastal management.

The 13 scholars, chosen from a pool of highly talented applicants, have proven themselves not only academically but also as passionate advocates for sustainable coastal practices, with their diverse backgrounds and varied experiences contributing to the richness of the program, promising a collaborative and dynamic learning environment. The scholars were selected for 3 Master of Philosophy programmes. Five of the scholars will be pursuing an MPhil in Blue Economy, Governance and Social Resilience; another five will be pursuing an MPhil in Integrated Coastal Zone Management while three will be pursuing an MPhil in Environmental Science.

In a welcome and debriefing meeting with the scholars held on the 30th November 2023, Mrs Sika Abrokwa, the Grants Manager of the Centre for Coastal Management, expressed enthusiasm about the caliber of scholars selected and indicated that the final selection reflects the exceptional qualities and potential that these scholars bring to the table.

The scholarship recipients will embark on a transformative academic journey, engaging in cutting-edge research and gaining hands-on experience in marine science. The program offers a unique opportunity for these scholars to deepen their understanding of environmental challenges, foster innovation, and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of coastal regions.
