World Wetlands Day Celebration with students at Dabala

Staff of the Centre for Coastal Management in partnership with the Calgary Zoo/Wilder Institute, Forestry Commission and the Avu Lagoon Community Resource Management Area (CREMA) board celebrated the World Wetlands Day at Tosukpo DA Basic school at Dabala in the Volta Region of Ghana, on Thursday, February 2nd, 2023. 

The event was graced by the Deputy Director of CCM (Dr. Precious Mattah), the Headmaster of the school (Mr. Wisdom Napoleon Agbenyeho), staff of the school and members of the Avu lagoon board. 

Interactive discussion were held with the pupils on the importance of wetlands and how critical the health of the Avu lagoon protected area is to the survival of the last population of the Sitatunga (Amphibious Antelope). The session was facilitated by the CREMA manager, Mrs. Rita Goka-Balokah. 

The event was climaxed with a clean-up of the landing site and rum manufacturing site at the lagoon with full participation of staff and pupils. 

The event re-awakened a desire in these youngsters to take collective action in protecting this critical wetland
